StarNav Competitively Selected for $1.1M Army Funding to Develop New Positioning Technology

Riverside, CA, 09/14/2022 – The U.S. Army has formally announced nearly $7 million in contract funding for six small businesses to transition various emerging tech solutions from concept to prototype. Each of the six companies will receive nearly $1.1 million in funding over the next 24 months through the Army Applied Small Business Innovation Research Program.

StarNav’s CEO, Dr. Joshua Morales explains “this award from the Army will help empower our company to enhance our solutions for GPS jamming to protect armed forces overseas.”

The company has participated in several conferences and presented their solutions for positioning while in GPS-challenged environments through the utilization of ambient terrestrial and satellite-transmitted communication signals.

This solution is reducing cutting-edge research to practice. Companies like StarNav are racing to be the frontrunner of this solution, and the US Military is knocking on their door to be one of the first customers.

“Providing a safe alternative for the Army when GPS is compromised is at the top of our agenda. While we continue to better understand signals available to us in various environments, we also ensure our technology provides GPS when available. We want to disrupt the navigation industry with the development of our prototype and are thrilled to report our success during this contract with the Army,” said Morales.

Emerging GPS jamming and spoofing threats are sophisticated and can cause problems for existing PNT systems. This can lead to mission failure and safety concerns for our armed forces when deployed. StarNav’s solution will lend a new perspective to the positioning and navigation problem by employing innovative ways of maintaining positioning when GPS is no longer available.

About Army SBIR program

Through the Army Applied SBIR program, selected small businesses work closely with technical points of contact, who serve as a resource for companies as they mature their technologies for insertion into Army programs of record.

The program’s flexibility and timeliness in responding to the Army’s emerging technology needs maximize the initial cash flow for small businesses while minimizing the time to contract.

“Partnership with innovative small businesses through the SBIR program is an extremely efficient way to access top-notch talent who can execute rapid development of technologies,” Hall said. “An added benefit of the SBIR path is that the technology data rights can be licensed to multiple tier-1 suppliers, thereby fostering healthy competition and widespread proliferation.”
